Celebrating a Year of DuckFluencers
Story by Mark Wang, BS ’19
You may have heard of influencers, but have you ever heard of a DuckFluencer?
In August 2024, the University of Oregon launched the DuckFluencer program, powered by SocialToaster. This social media ambassador initiative invites Ducks near and far to share university news, test their Oregon knowledge through themed quizzes, and show off their Duck pride in monthly photo challenges.
By engaging in these activities, participants earn points and unlock opportunities to win exclusive Duck swag. So far, 26 prizes have been awarded to fans, alumni, and students, including Nike shirts, signed footballs, and collector’s items that celebrate all things Oregon.
One Year of DuckFluencing
Since launch, participants have shared more than 173 stories celebrating the university community, from groundbreaking research and faculty achievements to lighthearted features about everyone’s favorite feathered mascot.
These stories come from across campus, including different schools, colleges, and non-academic units. Occasionally, the initiative also features pieces from regional or national publications and networks that spotlight work produced by individuals affiliated with the university.
DuckFluencers who have been a part of the program’s first year shared that the program makes it easy to stay connected, no matter where they live.
As recent prize-winner, Christian Moreno, BS ’19, explained, “I live states away from Oregon now, and it keeps me feeling like I'm part of the community. It also doesn’t hurt that you get some cool stuff from it.”
Be a DuckFluencer Like These
DuckFluencers engage for a variety of reasons: some to stay connected, others to celebrate their university roots.
Moreno said that joining the program was a natural extension of his continued connection to the UO and gives him the nostalgic feeling of when he was a student.
“I was already sharing a lot of what was going on at the UO, so it felt pretty normal to continue sharing the content,” said Moreno. “But now I get to hear about these stories early and in a more targeted way that gives me joy in sharing with the others I went to school with!”
Francis Lycett, a prize-winner from December 2024, is not only a Ducks fan herself, but it runs in the family.
“I've been a fan of UO sports for years and my son is an alum and an employee of the university,” she said. “DuckFluencer is a great way to share all the great things about Oregon! What have you got to lose?”
Echoing that enthusiasm, Vincson Green, BA ’83, appreciates how easy the program makes it to spread the Duck spirit.
“I find the information informative, and I think others need to see it!” he said. “I love the UO, and it takes a few minutes to spread the love of a great school to others.”
He emphasized that hearing about the UO from someone familiar and trustworthy makes a real difference.
