About the Fund

The James L. and Ilene R. Hershner Professor of Jurisprudence was established by Ilene and James Hershner in 1992 to support and enrich the study of law at the University of Oregon. The donors sought to aid in the development of students interested in adapted to the private practice of law. Mr. and Mrs. Hershner believed the development of efficiency and common sense in the application of the principles of the law is important, along with a student's ability to analyze an issue from all sides. Ilene attended the University of Oregon and was an active member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Upon her college graduation in 1954, she married James Lawrence Hershner, who graduated from the University of Oregon in 1951 and the University of Oregon Law School in 1954. She served on the boards of The Junior League of Eugene, Maude Kerns Art Center and The Eugene Symphony.
