Richard M. and Patricia H. Noyes Professor in Chemistry
established by Patricia Noyes in 2003 to support teaching and research in Chemistry, "to assist in fostering scholarship and the spirit of inquiry"

Michael Haley joined the faculty at the University of Oregon in 1993 where he is currently the Richard M. and Patricia H. Noyes Professor of Chemistry and a Knight Campus Associate. He was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana but spent most of his pre-college years growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He received both his bachelor’s (1987) and PhD (1991) degrees from Rice University working with Professor Ed Billups. Haley then pursued his postdoctoral studies with Professor Peter Vollhardt at the University of California-Berkeley (1991-1993).

Haley is a well-recognized expert in the synthesis and study of aromatic and carbon-rich hydrocarbons with potential applications in materials science. He has co-authored over 230 research articles (papers, reviews, book chapters) and published most of these studies in some of the most respected chemistry journals. Haley was recognized for his innovative hydrocarbon research with the 2021 American Chemical Society George A. Olah Award in Hydrocarbon or Petroleum Chemistry. He serves on the joint editorial board for Synlett and Synthesis and on the editorial board of the Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry

Haley was co-founder of SupraSensor Technologies, a UO spinout that sought to commercialize remote sensors for nutrient management in precision agriculture and was acquired by The Climate Corporation in 2016. He is a recipient of UO’s Thomas F. Herman Faculty Achievement Award for Distinguished Teaching, Research Innovation Commercialization Sustainability Award, the Research Excellence Award for Innovation and Impact, and the Fund for Faculty Excellence Award. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has held fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

When not on campus, he can often be found on the mountain snowboarding, on the river kayaking, in the backyard tending his fruit and vegetable gardens, or in the kitchen cooking, usually with wine glass in hand.
