People Who Make a Difference Start Here
They come from big cities and small, from the West Coast and beyond, even from other countries—students with big dreams but little confidence, vague hopes but little certainty.
They leave with a diploma and a plan, but much more: inspiration from a professor who believed in them; confidence in their leadership skills; a broader awareness of the world and their possible place in it. They know how to express themselves, how to think critically, how to get information, how to make the most of their abilities.
It is no surprise that University of Oregon alumni influence others in profound ways, whether their accomplishments are broadcast around the world or appreciated only in a small business, a kindergarten classroom, or a family dinner table. From transistor effect inventor and Nobel Prize-winner Walter Brattain, M.S. ’26, to passionate long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine, from pioneering entrepreneur and Nike cofounder Phil Knight ’59 to intrepid polar explorer Ann Bancroft ’81, UO alumni make a statement, make an impact, make a difference. Such individuals come to the University of Oregon with great potential. While they are here, they gain confidence. After they leave, they change the world. |
