Resident Halls
Living-Learning Center: Enriching Student Social and Academic Life
As the first step in the plan to upgrade residence halls, the UO in 2006 will open its first “living-learning center,” where students will not only live in larger, better appointed rooms but will also mingle with faculty members and attend classes, performances, and meetings. The first floor of the building on East Fifteenth Avenue between the Earl and Walton housing complexes will have two classrooms, a performance hall, a café, study rooms, and lobby and meeting areas.
The idea of the “living-learning center” is to blur the lines between social and academic campus experiences, making both richer, more memorable, and more valuable. Living-learning students were more likely than their counterparts to be involved in mentoring relationships with faculty members, to enjoy the intellectual exploration of ideas, to participate in study-abroad programs, and to maintain a sense of academic self-confidence.
