'You Gotta Live in the Dorms'

Matt Bentz was apprehensive about living in a residence hall his freshman year. He wasn’t sure about living with a group of people he didn’t know, much less sharing a room with a complete stranger.

But a call over the summer from his new-roommate-to-be, Ryan Williamson, reassured him. “Ryan and I clicked immediately,” Matt remembers. “We had so much in common.”

“Living in the dorms felt like summer camp,” Matt says. “We’d roll out of our sleeping boxes, go down to the dining room for dinner, study with friends, then pick up a game of basketball.”

Dorm life made it easy for him to connect to campus and introduced him to students from a wide range of backgrounds. “You gotta live in the dorms,” says Matt. “School is what you’re here for, but a big part of college life is living in the dorms.”

Matt Bentz, left, and Ryan Williamson decided to room together again senior year after becoming close friends as freshman roommates in the dorms.
