'Our Hearts Go Out to the Kids'

“Every time we see what it costs to go to college nowadays, our hearts go out to the kids,” says Phyllis Lund of Eugene, who supports a fully endowed Presidential Scholarship with her husband, Warren, a 1948 UO graduate and retired partner in a plywood products company.

Their scholarship has paid for tuition and books for dozens of students over the years, including Laura Bishow, a journalism major from Eugene, pictured with the Lunds on the cover and above. A 4.0 student, varsity swimmer, and violinist at South Eugene High School, Laura was recruited by Linfield College, UC-Davis, and Cal Poly-Pomona. The Presidential Scholarship was a major factor in her decision to attend the UO.

“I really appreciate everything the Lunds have done,” says Laura. “Their generosity is just amazing. I really feel like they’re helping students succeed in life.”

Student Laura Bishow says scholarship donors Warren and Phyllis Lund have made it possible for her to attend college without incurring a high level of debt.
