The Singer

From a small coastal town in Oregon to the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. That’s the path Erica Kay Brookhyser is traveling, with the help of the H.B. Densmore Scholarship in the UO School of Music. Awarded by the Women’s Choral Society each year to a female voice major, the $1,500 scholarship “has allowed me to get a top-rate music education without having to go into debt,” says Brookhyser, a mezzo-soprano who was a semi-finalist in the 2004 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in New York City. “I want to make a career out of singing great music—that’s it,” says Erica. “I don’t care if it’s in opera or concert repertoire. I just want to make meaningful music my whole life long.”
