Building a Future
The Doctor
Brian Truong of Beaverton is a perfect example of how scholarships can help keep top students in Oregon for college and careers. The son of Vietnamese immigrants, Brian is something of a whiz kid. He knew his multiplication tables at age five, finished all his calculus courses as a sophomore in high school, and was a member of the Westview High School state champion Brain Bowl Team in 2003. The biochemistry and math major plans to become a physician and medical researcher and already has a theory about what causes cancer. Brian applied to fourteen universities and was accepted by twelve. He badly wanted to attend UC-Berkeley, but he chose the University of Oregon. Why? He got enough financial aid, including a Presidential Scholarship, to cover all his costs here. Statistics indicate that Brian will stay in Oregon after college, so if he makes a scientific breakthrough, Oregon will be the first to reap the health and economic benefits. |
