A specialist in the culture and languages of India who loves fly-fishing and jaunty hats will lead the University of Oregon as president starting this summer.
Richard Lariviere, fifty-nine, vice chancellor and provost at the University of Kansas since 2006, was hired in a unanimous vote by the Oregon State Board of Higher Education on March 13. He will succeed Dave Frohnmayer, who is retiring after fifteen years as president.
Known as an effective team-builder and fundraiser, Lariviere (pronounced Luh-riv-yair) served from 1999 to 2006 as dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas. During his tenure, the college completed a successful fundraising campaign, increased the size of its faculty, and doubled external research funding. Starting in 1982 as an assistant professor of Sanskrit, the classical literary language of India, Lariviere spent twenty-four years at UT.
"My wife, Jan, and I are excited to begin working with the faculty, staff, students, and the extended UO community," Lariviere said. "Our goal is to support the great talent of this community so that it can accelerate the university to successes worthy of the people
of Oregon."
