Spring 2007
PORTRAIT OF SUCCESS: ALLETTA BRENNER
Graduated: June 2006
Distinctive Honor: In 2006, Brenner won the prestigious Marshall Scholarship
from the British government. Given to just forty recipients each year, the award
is one of the two most prestigious honors for study abroad that can be won by
any American student.
Scholarships: Brenner won a Presidential Scholarship, scholarships from the
Clark Honors College, the Women’s and Gender Studies program, and top
honors in the library’s Undergraduate Library Research Awards competition.
“These scholarships were really important for me as my family had very
few resources to help me attend school,” says Brenner.
Currently: Working on her master’s degree in international and European
politics at the University of Edinburgh. Brenner plans to finish this summer,
then start her second master’s in human rights at the London School of
Economics.
Dreams for the future: Brenner wants to work in international law for either
the international criminal court in the Hague or the United Nations.
Bet you didn’t know: She’s training for the Edinburgh Marathon.
On UO education: “It was the offer of a full ride that made me choose
to attend the UO. Now that I have the perspective of another institution in
another country, I can say that the University of Oregon offers
a very good quality education in a wide variety of areas that are not necessarily
offered at other institutions,” says Brenner. “At Oregon, undergraduates
have the opportunity to push themselves to the best of their
ability, to do work at a very high level of sophistication, and to engage with
and be challenged by their professors in a way that fosters individual growth.”
