Facing the Future

Music has enriched our lives. That’s why the two of us have served on the board of the Oregon Bach Festival.

That’s also why we’ve agreed to head the development committee and do everything we can to help the festival meet its endowment goal of $10 million and continue its tradition of world-class performance, innovative programming, and music education.

The Oregon Bach Festival transforms lives. Read the stories in this book, and you’ll learn how the festival has helped reconcile historical conflicts, brought different cultures together, and sparked the dreams of a fifteen-year-old girl.

The festival also transforms music, commissioning and premiering major works and fostering the careers of musicians and composers. By having the courage to commission, premier, and record new artists and composers, the festival keeps classical music alive.

The festival started as a series of workshops for UO music students and faculty, and education is still a major component of this annual celebration. Children who learn about classical music grow into adults who play and appreciate classical music. Music education helps children learn self-discipline, teamwork, commitment, and other skills that translate into success in school and in life.

The joy we have experienced from planning and working through the gift process has been life-changing. We knew the festival was something special, but we weren’t expecting to have our lives so completely altered as well.

We can’t imagine a world without classical music performances. Or one without music education for our children, grandchildren, or their teachers. Let’s help make sure such a world never comes to pass.
