MarAbel Braden Frohnmayer

Early Life/Education

  • Born Jan. 16, 1909 in Minneapolis, Minn, moved with her family to Albany, Ore., in 1912.
  • Graduated from Albany High School.
  • Received her Bachelor of Arts degree in music in 1931 from the University of Oregon, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and was elected to the music honorary Mu Phi Epsilon.

Career

  • Taught elementary and secondary education in McMinnville, Merrill, and Medford, Ore., 1931-36.

Family

  • Married Medford attorney Otto Frohnmayer '29, J.D. '33, on June 10, 1936.

Four children:

  • Mira Frohnmayer '60, of Yachats, Ore., professor emeritus of music and chair of vocal studies at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash.
  • Dave Frohnmayer, University of Oregon president.
  • John Frohnmayer, J.D. '72, of Corvallis, Ore., currently an affiliate professor of liberal arts at Oregon State University; former attorney in Eugene, Portland, and Bozeman, Mont.; chairman of the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA), 1989-92.
  • Philip Frohnmayer, M. Mus. '72, professor of music and chair of vocal studies, Loyola University, New Orleans, La.

Community Service

  • Cofounder, Rogue Valley Symphony.
  • First president, Rogue Valley Chorale.
  • Chairwoman, Civic Music Association and Community Concerts, Medford.
  • Board member, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Britt Music Festival, and Rogue Valley Opera.
  • Founding member and president, Rogue Valley Hospital Auxiliary.
  • Active in the First Presbyterian Church; PEO, an international women's organization promoting education and philanthropy; and the Contemporary Book Club.

Awards

  • University of Oregon Distinguished Service Award, 1993.
  • University of Oregon School of Music Distinguished Alumna Award, 1993.
  • Zonta Woman of the Year, 1986-87.
  • Bertha Holt Award, Oregon Association of American Mothers, 1985.
