Mark Hatfield served two terms as governor of Oregon. During this time, he was a champion for the timber and agriculture industries and invested in industrial development and education. He served for 30 years as US Senator from Oregon, eight of those as the chairman of the Appropriations Committee. Hatfield was a strong advocate for federal spending on medical research, backing bigger budgets for the NIH and the creation of the Institutes’ Office of Rare Diseases Research.
