Richard Lariviere accepts the university’s official mace from George Pernsteiner, chancellor of the Oregon University System, during his May 21 investiture as the University of Oregon’s sixteenth president. Lariviere, who took office as president last July 1, participated in the traditional academic ceremony in the Memorial Quad before about 250 professors, visiting presidents from other universities, students, staff members, and community dignitaries inside a huge tent on a cold, rainy spring day. President Lariviere’s academic regalia reflects the colors of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his doctorate in Sanskrit in 1978.
